What is endpoint security?

Endpoint security is the set of controls that protect laptops, desktops, servers, mobile devices and virtual machines — the places where users work and where attackers first land. Modern endpoint tools combine prevention (blocking known malware and exploits), detection (spotting suspicious behaviour that prevention missed) and response (isolating a device, killing a process, rolling back changes) in a single agent managed from a cloud console.

The category is easiest to navigate once you separate the three product classes below. Most enterprise buyers end up with an EPP+EDR platform from one vendor, optionally run for them as a managed (MDR) service.

EPP (Endpoint Protection Platform)
Prevention-first: next-generation antivirus, exploit mitigation, device control and disk encryption. The baseline every device needs.
EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response)
Continuous telemetry, behavioural detection and investigation/response tooling for threats that slip past prevention. Requires analysts to act on alerts.
XDR (Extended Detection and Response)
EDR data correlated with identity, email, network and cloud signals in one detection layer.
MDR (Managed Detection and Response)
EDR/XDR operated 24×7 by the vendor or a partner, for teams without a staffed SOC.

Best for: Every organisation needs EPP; add EDR when you have (or outsource) people to investigate alerts; choose MDR when you do not.
